Great, stunning show at Local 506 on Saturday night.
I love a great bill of bands, but one of the things that is tough about a great bill (Rat Jackson, Spider Bags, Red Collar – in this case) is that the reality of the show then has to meet or exceeded the expectations everyone has based on the awesome potential of the bill.
Happily, Saturday night’s show at 506 more than lived up to those weighty expectations.
Rat Jackson started the night off right.
I was trying to describe Rat Jackson to a friend who’d never seen them before the show and I said it was: smart, sleazy rock and roll that seems like it is always about to completely fall apart but somehow never does. Fantastic.
Spider Bags were up next and started off with a couple of songs with Reese McHenry on lead vocals.
And they ripped through their whole set of loud, dance-able garage rock. About halfway through the Spider Bags set, I realized I’d been smiling since the first note of the night and just couldn’t stop grinning – and that didn’t change as Spider Bags wrapped up and Red Collar took over.
The folks from Red Collar knew what they were doing when they picked their openers, but after both openers killed it, they had alot of work to do to keep the energy of the night moving. And they did so, beautifully.
One of my favorite things about Red Collar is how they manage to be so free-wheeling and so intense at the same time.
It gives the whole set a pretty beautiful tension.
And, more than anything else, it is just one heck of a rock show.
