Orpheus Statue, Fort McHenry

One of my favorite things about National Parks is how surprising, how unexpected they can be. I don’t just mean unexpectedly, stunningly beautiful – although they are that. I mean their delightful randomness. No one has ever been able to explain to me why this stunning statue of Orpheus is at Fort McHenry. It doesn’t make sense but some how it fits, filing the space between the Fort and the Baltimore skyline.

  1. It has to do with a connection to Francis Scott Key, the writer of the “Star Spangled Banner,” I assume because the demi-god of Music (also associated with the Muses) would have something to do with a song writer.
